LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It was another productive race at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park in the Greater Louisville Classic for the University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams, as the Cardinal men captured their second-straight team title and Kim Grieshaber led the women with a fourth-place finish, sixth overall.
"The men executed the race plan with perfection," head cross country coach Brice Allen says. "We're bringing down the gap from 1-5 weekly. I'm really pleased with our seniors, especially Michael Eaton leading the group. Even despite a sprained ankle, which is healing, Matt Bruce persevered for the team, and that was great to see. It was a great day of cross country for the Cardinals."
Eaton not only led the Cardinals with a seventh-place finish, eighth overall, but his 8K time of 23:35.66 becomes the 10th fastest time on the men's side at the course. Additionally, Eaton moves up the charts, as he now holds the third-fastest time for a Cardinal at the state park. Only former Louisville standout Wesley Korir's times of 23:18.6 (10/27/07) and 23:20.5 (9/29/07) rank ahead of Eaton.
Hughes, competing in only his second race of the season, had a strong start and completed the course in 23:48.48 to earn 10th place. His time also ranks among the top 20, as he overtakes former Cardinal Soimo Kiplagat for the 19th-fastest time on the course.
However, one of the more impressive performances of the morning came from Tyler Byrne. A true freshman, Byrne crossed the finish line in 21st with a time of 24:15.69. The mark is the second fastest among any Cardinal true freshman, only behind Korir's time in 2004 of 24:22.82.
Rounding out the men's placewinners were Bruce (25th), Luke Lovelace (34th), Evan Hibbs (51st) and Ryan Eaton (53rd).
On the women's side, and for the third time this season, Grieshaber was the Cardinals' top finisher. Despite an extremely competitive group of runners, including Shippensburg's Neely Spence the 2008 NCAA Division II national cross country runner-up, Grieshaber completed the 5K course in 17:17:54 for fourth place.
"I'm really pleased with our three lead senior women," Allen adds. "Kim's a testament to what hard work can do over a season. She had a minor injury, but battled through it for the team, set a personal record, and you have to be happy with that. We need to improve our gap from 1-5, though, as we move on to Terre Haute."
Also with a strong showing was Emily Borsare, who's been a major contributor this season. Her time of 17:41.36 earned her 24th place, 26th overall. Newcomer Monica Hernandez rounded out the top three for the women, as she took 57th place in the race.
The cross country teams are idle next weekend and return to action at Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., on Sept. 16. Both races will be held at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
