No. 19 Men's Tennis Falls to VCU 4-3

RICHMOND, Va. - - The 19th-ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team took a 3-0 lead but could not hang on as host Virginia Commonwealth University picked up four singles wins to beat the Cards 4-3 Friday at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
The Cardinals won at Nos. 2 and 3 to take the doubles point. Austen Childs and Sumit-Prakash Gupta teamed to beat Thibaut Charron and Bobo Delemark 8-5 at No. 2 and Alejandro Calligari and Robert Hall defeated Filip Svensson and Martin Shaulhauser 8-4 at No. 3. VCU's 72nd ranked duo of Emil Lindgren and Benjamin Bouhana topped Simon Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk at the top seed.
No. 40 Austen Childs gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Charron at the top seed. Simon Childs edged Bouhana 7-6(4), 6-4 at the three-spot to make the lead 3-0.
VCU notched wins at Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6 to get the win. Schulhauser topped Maksimcuk 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 2 seed to put the Rams on the board. Delemark registered a 7-6(5), 6-0 win over Robert Hall at No. 6 and Lindgren's 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over Calligari at No. 4 tied the match. The clinching point came down to the No. 5 court, where Svensson defeated Louisville's Andrew Carter 6-2 in the first set, but Carter came back to win 6-3 in the second. Svensson closed the match with a 6-3 win in the third.
"It's definitely disappointing when you're up 3-0 at someone else's court and have four chances to win one point and don't," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "When you have Alejandro Calligari and Viktor Maksimcuk among those courts, you think you'll close out the match, but we didn't. We played well in doubles and I still have confidence in this team. We just have to learn to close matches better. The good times will come back."
Louisville (16-6) will face BIG EAST Conference foe South Florida in a neutral match Saturday at 10 a.m. at VCU's Thalhimer Tennis Center.
