The Cards improve to 13-3 on the season.
"The players did a great job of `bouncing back' after the loss at Virginia Tech," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We have been playing so much tennis and training relentlessly and I was concerned how much gas they have left in the tank. They proved to me they are in great shape. These guys have a lot of character. They can recover very well after a tough loss which shows a lot of pride. To shutout a team that played in the NCAA tournament last year was impressive. Simon Childs was the MVP of the match."
In the first match of the day, the Cards swept doubles to take the first point of the match. The No. 15-ranked duo of Austen Childs and Simon Childs defeated Doug Matthews and Chirs Herrlinger 8-5 at the top seed. Robert Rotaru and Alejandro Calligari edged Ra'ees and Ismail and JT Torbest 8-7 at the No. 2 position while Viktor Maksimcuk and Robert Hall teamed to beat Bobby Deye and Brian Starr 8-3 at the three-spot.
Louisville won all six singles matches in straight sets to complete the 7-0 victory. At the top seed, No. 40 Austen Childs beat Matthews 6-2, 6-3. Maksimcuk, No. 74 in the ITA singles rankings, defeated Chris Herrlinger 6-2, 6-4. Simon Childs topped Ismail 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. Calligari rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Richard Canelas at the four-spot. Hall picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Deye at No. 5 and Andrew Carter defeated Torbeck 6-3, 6-2 at the six seed.
The second match of the day went much like the first with the Cards sweeping singles and doubles en route to a 7-0 win over Southern Illnois.
Childs and Childs picked up their second victory of the day, an 8-3 decision over Lucas Waked and Anton Leonenko at the top seed. Rotaru and Calligari also won again, defeating Hugo Vidal and Sebastian Rubiano 8-4 at No. 2. Maksimcuk and Tim Barnoud teamed for an 8-3 win over Felipe Villasenor and Eric West at the three seed.
Once again, U of L swept through singles in straight sets. This time, it was Maksimcuk who took the No. 1 slot with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Waked. Simon Childs stepped in with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Villasenor at No. 2. Calligari edged West 6-4, 7-6(4) at the three-spot. Hall topped Vidal 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. After winning the first set 6-2, No. 5 seed Andrew Carter rallied from being down 5-2 in the second to beat Leonenko 6-2, 7-5 and increase his win streak to 14 matches. Rotaru defeated Rubiano 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6.
"I thought the guys handled a dangerous doubleheader in a very professional way," said Ecarma. "They were focused, efficient and took care of business and sealed the deal at the first opportunity. They are off to a well-deserved rest."
The Cards will return to action on March 14 when they travel to Middle Tennessee.
