LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The No. 33 University of Louisville men's tennis team took an early lead, but couldn't hang on as No. 30 Wake Forest edged the Cards 4-3 Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"We hurt tonight, but we will come out and work hard tomorrow," said U of L assistant coach Rodrigo daSilva. "We have another challenge waiting for us when No. 13 Texas A&M comes to town Sunday."
The Cards opened the match by taking the doubles point. The No. 1 slot in doubles featured a clash of two top-10 tandems with Wake Forest's top-ranked Cory Parr and Steve Forman prevailing 8-4 over Louisville's sixth-ranked Austen Childs and Simon Childs. Louisville's Viktor Maksimcuk and Robert Hall defeated Wake's Andrew Brasseaux and Joost Vogel 8-6 at the No. 3.seed. The doubles point was decided at the No. 2 slot where the Cards' Robert Rotaru and Alejandro Calligari pulled out an 8-6 win over Iain Adkinson and Jonathan Wolff.
In singles action, Louisville went up 3-0 as Maksimcuk and Simon Childs picked up straight set wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Maksimcuk beat Atkinson 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and Simon Childs topped Forman 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.
The Demon Deacons roared back. At the top seed, Parr, No. 37 in the ITA singles rankings defeated No. 46 Austen Childs 6-2, 7-6. Brasseaux beat Rotaru 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 to make the score 3-2.
The final two courts featured three-set battles at Nos. 5 and 6. In the six spot, Louisville's Hall defeated Wake Forest's David Hopkins 6-2 in the first set, but Hopkins came back to win the next two sets 6-4,7-5, knotting the score at 3-3. The match came down to the No. 4 seed where Calligari beat Wolff 6-2 in the first set, but Wolff edged Calligari 7-5, 7-5 in the next two for the win.
"This loss was really disappointing," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We felt like we control after winning the doubles point and going up 3-0. I can't think of that ever happening before in the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. This was an emotional match and very challenging. We were playing in front of 200 fans here and it would have been a great win."
The Cardinals (10-2) are back in action Sunday when they play host to 13th ranked Texas A&M at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
