LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis completed a doubleheader sweep with a 7-0 win over Belmont Tuesday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards defeated Eastern Kentucky 7-0 in an early afternoon match.
"Belmont gave us a real challenge tonight," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Any team that plays close with Virginia - who just won the National Team Indoor Championship - is going to be tough. I am pleased that our No. 3 doubles team came out with a win. Robert Hall and Alejandro Calligari defeated the Belmont players who scored wins against Virginia."
For the second consecutive match, Louisville won all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Austen Childs and Simon Childs teamed to beat Fausto Rocha and Renato Anton 8-5 at the top seed. The 44th-ranked duo of Robert Rotaru and Alejandro Calligari rolled to an 8-3 win over Javier Rodriguez and Felipa Cirne-Lima 8-3 at the two-spot. Sumit-Prakash Gupta and Adam Donaldson edged Joao Paoliello and Rodrigo Amaral 8-7 (9-7) at No. 3.
The Cards swept the singles points in straight sets for the second time Tuesday. No. 47 Austen Childs defeated Joao Paoliello 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1. Viktor Maksimcuk beat Rocha 6-2, 6-1 at the two-spot. #65 Simon Childs topped Rodriguez 6-3, 6-4 at the three-spot. Calligari picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Antun at the four-seed. Robert Hall beat Amaral 7-6(7-4), 6-2 at No. 5. Andrew Carter closed the match with a 7-6 (7-4) victory over Cirne-Lima.
Louisville improves to 9-1 on the season and has now won 20 of its last 21 matches at home. The Cards will travel to Nashville to face No. 28 Vanderbilt on Feb. 22.
