LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team closes the home season with 6-1 win over Tennessee Tech Wednesday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"Anytime you play a team favored to win their conference, you have a battle on your hands," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They were extremely talented at several spots and we had to play well to win those courts. We finished with a 14-1 record at home and I am very proud of how our players defended our turf. I want to acknowledge senior Pablo Camacho and thank home for his service to me and the U of L tennis program over the last four years. It was a pleasure to coach him."
The match was originally scheduled to be played outdoors, but was moved to the indoor courts because of lingering rain in the area.
Louisville took the doubles point to start the match. Simon Childs and Kenneth Nordheim defeated Tennessee Tech's James Crawford and Mario Gutierrez 8-4 at No. 3. Dean P'Brien and Giovanni Vaglietti posted an 8-5 win over Louisville's David Simon and Viktor Maksimcuk at No. 1 to give each team a doubles win, but Louisville's Austen Childs and James McArthur edged Barja Zarco and Tiago Gilioli at No. 2 to clinch the point.
The Cards went on to win five of six singles matches en route to the 6-1 win. Simon defeated Golioli 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot. Maksimcuk Dean O'Brien 6-3, 6-7, 10-6 at No. 3. Simon Childs topped Vaglietti 6-1, 6-1 at the four-spot. Alejandro Calligari improved to a team-best 25 wins by defeating Lloyd Harrid 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 and Robert Rotaru rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Juan Pablo Gomez at the No. 6 seed.
Zarco picked up Tech's only point with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Louisville's 39th ranked singles player Austen Childs at the top seed. Tennessee Tech drops to 15-4 on the season.
"Robert Rotaru played exactly the way we wanted him to, keeping his unforced errors to a minimum and firing up himself and his teammates," said Ecarma. "Robert and Simon Childs are our co-players of the match."
The Cards posted a 14-1 record at home this season with their only loss coming at the hands of then-No. 16 Tennessee on Feb. 8.
The Cardinals (16-5) will wrap up the home season at BIG EAST Conference foe Notre Dame on April 13. Following that match, Louisville will travel to Tampa, Fla., for the conference tournament April 17-20.
