The No. 61-ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team upset No. 28 Wisconsin by winning the doubles point and taking four singles matches Saturday night at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"Wisconsin is one of the pre-season favorite to win the Big Ten," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They are led by seniors and they are loaded with talent. But my group of freshman and sophomores were not intimidated by anything and played like veterans for the 5-2 win."
The Cardinals gained match momentum when they took the doubles point. The undefeated team of Simon Childs and Austen Childs held on to win 9-8 for an upset of the No. 26 ranked Jeremy Sonkin and Luke Rassow-Kantor. The newly formed doubles team of Viktor Maksimcuk and Alejandro Calligari pulled out the deciding win for the doubles point.
"Austen Childs and Simon Childs will be nationally ranked in next ranking period with this signature win," said Ecarma.
After the doubles point, the Cardinals took that momentum into singles. Austen Childs and Robert Rotaru took the No. 1 and No. 5 respectively to go up 3-0. Wisconsin fought back, winning at No.6 and No. 4 to get within striking distance at 3-2. U of L's David Simon clinched the match by beating two-time Kentucky State High School Champion Nolan Polley 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3. Maksimcuk's win over All-Big Ten Jeremy Sonkin at No. 3 by a score of 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 to add an insurance point.
