LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Angel McCoughtry scored 31 points to lead No. 12 Louisville to a 75-59 victory over Kentucky on Sunday. Three other players scored in double figures for the Cardinals (9-1) with Candyce Bingham getting 14, Monique Reid 12 and Deseree' Byrd 10.
"We did do a very good job of taking care of the ball," said head coach Jeff Walz. "This could be the second game Angel has had more assists than turnovers. I thought she did a good job of not trying to force things and Deseree' Byrd is really developing into a good point guard for us."
Lydia Watkins led Kentucky (5-5) with 15 points, going 6-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from the 3-point line.
"Well, I thought it was a real tough game, a hard fought game. I think both teams played real hard. I just really admire the way Angel McCoughtry plays basketball; I think she just makes her team so much better in so many ways. I thought she was clearly the difference in the game. She is just a first rate player, but I was very proud of the effort our team gave. We certainly didn't execute the way we wanted to. I thought we fought today and that's progress for our team right now."
The tone was set early as the Cardinals increased their lead to as many as 17 points over the Wildcats in the first half. Louisville led 33-21 at halftime. The second half featured more of the same, with Louisville's lead never dropping below 10 points and extending to as many as 21 with 3:49 left in the game.
The crowd of 16,337 set the Louisville women's basketball, state of Kentucky and Big East Conference paid attendance record for a women's basketball game. The Lady Cardinals shot 41.4 percent from the field (29-for-70). The Wildcats shot 44.7 percent from the field (21-for-47).
