Men's Tennis Falls to VCU 5-2

LOUISVILLE Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis fell to visiting No. 31-ranked Virginia Commonwealth Sunday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Rams swept the double matches to take the double point early on. VCU's Arnoud LeCloerec and Petre Olsak teamed to upset Louisville's ninth-ranked duo of seniors Slavko Radman and Damar Johnson 8-5 at the top seed. Emil Lindgren and Sebastian Ropoll edged Louisville's freshman David Simon and sophomore Robert Rotaru 8-7 at the no. 2 spot. Sergi Arumi and Sebastien Deridder registered an 8-5 win over freshmen James McArthur and Chris Herrlinger 8-5 on court three.
In singles action, the Cards tied the match and went up 2-1 as Radman, No. 60 in the ITA singles rankings made quick work of VCU's No. 79 Petr Olsak 6-2, 6-2 at the top seed. Louisville's Johnson defeated Lindgren 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2.
The Rams responded with wins at Nos. 3-6 to get the victory. Damien Lacombe topped Kenneth Nordheim 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. Arumi and Rotaru battled at the No. 4 spot, but Arumi came away with the 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 win. Georges-Alexandre Israel beat Simon 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5 and Deridder defeated Horatiu Oltean 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
"This was one of our more frustrating losses this season," said U of L assistant coach Mark Beckham. "We had an opportunity to beat a high0level team in VCU and let is slip through our hands. We're getting better, but with the level of competition we are up against, we need to be better for longer periods of time - and we're not quite there yet. The guys fought hard today though - we just need to keep working."
The Cardinals (7-13) will close out the regular season when they play host to BIG EAST opponent Notre Dame Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
