The Catamounts jumped out to an early 5-0 lead but the Cardinals scored 11 straight points to take an 11-6 lead with just under 15 minutes remaining. Western Carolina cut the lead to two at the 12:30 mark but the Cardinals then went on an 8-0 run to go up 21-14 with just over eight minutes remaining.
Western Carolina came out of the timeout and went on an 8-0 run of their own to take a one point lead at the 4:36 mark. Louisville responded with a 4-0 run but Western Carolina finished the half with an 11-2 run to take a 33-29 lead at the break.
Western Carolina used a 10-0 run early in the second half to take the lead, which grew to 11 points, but Louisville rallied and had a two chances to tie it or take the lead in the final two minutes. Louisville had a total of four shots on those two possessions, but could not score. Louisville finished the game shooting a dismal 27-of-70 (38.6 percent) from the floor while Western Carolina shot 45 percent from the field. The Cardinals outrebounded Western Carolina 44-37.
The Cardinals will play Minnesota on Sunday to complete the Subway Classic's round-robin format. The Classic, an early season tournament hosted by Minnesota for the past six years, was forced to change its format after Indiana State withdrew from the tournament and a replacement team could not be found.
