Tennessee Tops Men's Tennis 7-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - - The #36 ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 7-0 to No. 41 Tennessee Tuesday in Knoxville. Louisville drops to 3-2 while Tennessee improves to 3-0 on the season.
The Vols took the doubles point to start the match. Louisville seniors Slavko Radman and Damar Johnson, No. 24 in the ITA doubles rankings defeated Johnny Thornton and Bobby Cameron 8-4 at the top seed. Tennessee's 34th-ranked Adam Hubble and Ben Rogers beat sophomores Pablo Camacho and Robert Rotaru 8-2 at No. 2 to tie the doubles matches. UT's Davey Sandgren and Kiril Tcherveniachki edged freshmen Chris Herrlinger and David Simon 9-7 at No. 3 for the decisive doubles point to give the Vols a 1-0 lead going into singles.
In singles action, Tennessee's Davey Sandgren's 6-2, 6-3 win over Rotaru at No. 4 gave the Vols a 2-0 lead. Tcherveniachki defeated Simon 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 to make it a 3-0 match. Slavko, No. 71 in the ITA singles rankings, lost to No. 24 Cameron 6-2 in the first set, but picked up a 7-6 win in the second before falling 6-1 in the third to give the Vols the win. Johnson battled Rogers to three sets but lost 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 at the two-spot. Tennessee's Derek Stephens defeated freshman Kenneth Nordheim 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5. Chris Racz closed out the match with a 10-7, win over Louisville freshman Horatiu Oltean.
"We fought hard but the Volunteers were brutally strong today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "The crowd unraveled us a little bit and we may have missed on an opportunity or two. But overall we were outplayed. This will be a good learning opportunity for the younger guys."
U of L will play host to Morehead State and Murray State in a doubleheader on Feb. 3 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The matches are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. respectively.
