
Women's Basketball Earns Bid to the NCAA Tournament

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville (19-9, 10-6) women's basketball team earned an at-large bid with a No. 9 seed in the Cleveland Regional when the 2006 NCAA Tournament pairings were announced on Monday evening.
The Cardinals will face the No. 8 seeded Vanderbilt Commodores (20-10) in the first round on Saturday, March 18 in Nashville, Tenn. The other matchup features the No. 1 seeded North Carolina Tarheels against the No. 16 seeded UC Riverside Highlanders. The game is scheduled to begin 30 minutes following the first matchup which is schedule to start at 8:00 p.m. EST on ESPN2.
The Cardinals return to the NCAA tournament for the second straight season and the 10th time overall. The No. 9 seed ties for the highest ranking in program history since the tournament expanded to 64-teams. The No. 5 seed in the BIG EAST Championship, Louisville completed its inaugural season with a 10-6 record in league play. The Cardinals received votes in the national ranking for 15 of the 18 weeks and faced-off against four Top 25 teams in the month of January.
The last time the Cardinals faced Vanderbilt was in head coach Tom Collen's first season with the Cardinals. Louisville fell in overtime to the Commodores 73-68 in Memorial Gymnasium.
