MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - - The No. 30 ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team extended its win streak to six matches with a 5-2 win over No. 40 Minnesota on Sunday in Murfreesboro, Tenn. U of L improves to 9-2 while Minnesota falls to 3-6 on the season.
"This was an extremely important win in the sense that we followed up a huge win against No. 15 Wake Forest with another win over and talented and dangerous team like Minnesota," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We were concerned about a letdown, but fortunately that did not happen."
The Cardinals grabbed the doubles point for the tenth time this season as the team of Damar Johnson and Jhonny Berrido improved to 10-1 on the season with an 8-4 win over Raoul Schwark and D.J. Geatz at the two-spot. Slavko Radman and Tony Teufel combined to defeat Nic Edlefsen and Adrien Debreyne 8-2 at No. 3. The No. 26 ranked team of Jakob Gustafsson and Jeremy Clark was leading 6-4 over Andres Osorio and Sion Wilkins 6-4 at the top seed when the match was suspended after the Cards clinched the point.
In singles action, Radman picked up a 6-3, 7-6 win over Geatz at No. 1. Gustafsson beat Edlefsen 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3. Berrido edged Schwark 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5) at the No. 5 spot. Robert Rotaru rounded out the singles points with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Wilkins at the six seed.
The Cardinals will travel to Corpus Christi, Texas March 2-4 for the HEB National Invitational.
"The team realizes the importance of each match and building on momentum," said Ecarma. "We feel we have a lot of momentum going into a very tough HEB National Invitational, which is important, because we have our sights set on winning a championship."
