The University of Louisville swimming and diving team split with Wright State with the women winning 175-125 and the men being edged 145-135 after trailing by just one point going into the final relay.

The Cardinals, who returned to action after a layoff of more than six weeks, were a bit rusty but were competitive across the board. U of L felt Wright State's home pool advantage keenly, as WSU welcomed back its swimming alumni in a pre-meet ceremony. The male Cardinals were without one of their most reliable point scorers in sprinter and relay stalwart, Matt Maley, who could not compete due to illness.

"It wasn't always pretty," said U of L coach Arthur Albiero. "We haven't raced in a while and certainly felt it was a slightly hostile but competitive atmosphere as the WSU athletes certainly wanted to show their stuff for the alumni. But I am very proud of our effort."

The meet started out with a strong Cardinal showing in the 200-medley relay effort by both the men and women. The women's team, made up by Larissa Niehoff, Johanna Nyysti, Jennifer Schimenti and Emily Rabe combined to edge WSU. The men's team of Andrei Teudean, Vali Preda, Tyler Smith and Jonathan Farnham surged at the end to beat WSU by 12 one hundreths of a second.

The women kept up their winning ways when Abby Miller and Ashley Jackson went one-two in the 1000 and then Melanie Greyling took the 200-free. For the men, Charlton Lawson added to the Cardinal totals with a win in the 200 free. In the next race, Leslie VanWinkle took second in the 100 back with Teaudean notching a victory for the men and Paul Augustus in his wake for a second.

The women got another first when Nyysti took the 100-breast and teammate Vali Preda won the 100-breast for the men. U of L scored a sweep in the 200-fly with Jennifer Schimenti, Heather Meng and Ashley Jackson finished first, second and third, respectively to add another 16 points for the Cardinals.

The 200-back was a pivotal event in the meet. The women had Abby Miller finish second and Teudean's first and Chris Pinkston's second added 13 points for the men.

"That was a huge boost for us in our intent to come back and win the men's meet," said Albiero.

The women fed off the momentum in the next race when Jackson finished first, just .09 ahead of the runner up in the 500-free. The men's comeback rally was thwarted when WSU rose to the challenge and swept the top three spots in the 500.

"We hoped to steal some points there in the 500 but they swept and held us at bay on the men's side," said Albiero.

Nyysti won the women's 100-fly but workhorse Teudean was edged out by .33 to come in as runnerup.

The Cardinals' have been nearly invincible in the individual medley events all season, continued their winning ways when VanWinkle, Schimenti and Leigh Smith swept the top three spots in the 200-IM. Vali Preda notched a win in the 200-IM for the men to bring the men to within one point going into the final relay.

The U of L women's team of Greyling, Nyysti, Rabe and VanWinkle finished first but the men's team of Paul Augustus, Matt Lees, Steven Lowrance and Charlton Lawson were out-touched to finish second.

For the divers, Robbie Lewis swept both boards and senior Katie Elder notched a first in the 3-meter board for the Cardinals. Marianne Bradford finished second in the 1-meter.

"This was a good meet, we are only 30 days away from our first BIG EAST championship and I think this was a good effort for us," said Albiero.
