
No. 13 Kentucky Defeats Men's Tennis 6-1

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell to No. 13 Kentucky 6-1 Wednesday at Kentucky's Hillary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
The Wildcats began the match sweeping doubles. The team of Jesse Witten and Tigran Martirosyan defeated Louisville's Jakob Gustafsson and Jeremy Clark 8-5 at the top seed. Kentucky's Matt Emery and Alex Hume topped Jhonny Berrido and Mark Kennedy 8-3 and Nate Emge and Nolan Polley teamed to beat Louisville's Damar Johnson and Tony Teufel 8-6 at the No. 3 seed.
In singles action, Kentucky's Witten, No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated Louisville's No. 124 Damar Johnson 6-4, 6-4 at the top seed. Louisville's Nicolas Houard took Matt Emery to three sets before falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2. Gustafsson fell to No. 120 Nate Emge of Kentucky 7-6, 7-5 at the three-spot. The Cardinals' Octavian Nicodim split sets with No. 108 Martirosyan, winning the first 7-6, falling 7-5 in the second, but Martiroyan won at No. 4 match in a tiebreaker. Berrido and Polley split sets, with Polley winning the first 7-6 and Berrido winning the second 7-6 before Polley won 1-0 in a super-tiebreaker.
Louisville freshman Tony Teufel picked up the Cards' only point in the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Jason Mallaiah at No. 5.
U of L (4-4), No. 40 in ITA team rankings, will travel to Boston to play Clemson on Feb. 12 and Harvard on Feb. 13.
