Swimming Makes Big Splash at Prestigious US Open

The University of Louisville swimming and diving team made an unprecedented showing at the 2005 US Open, Friday at Auburn, Alabama. The Cardinals sent five swimmers to the prestigious meet that features a field rich in international and even Olympic caliber swimmers.
"This is the first time ever that our progam has had athletes compete at such a prestigious meet. There is some very strong, international competition here and it's a great environment for our team gain very valuable experience," said U of L coach Arthur Albiero.
The 400-LC Free Relay team of Leslie VanWinkle, Johanna Nyysti, Abby Miller and Melanie Greyling made noise at the meet with a tenth place finish and a time of 4:30.36.
"The highlight of the night for us was the 400-meter relay because the 10th-place finish, against this type of competition, is really a huge accomplishment," said Albiero. "They did a great job and it was a great way to finish the second day."
Miller had a strong showing in the 400-LC IM with a 16th place (B-Final) and a time of 5:04.68. VanWinkle finished 19th in the 200-LC IM as U of L continues to turn heads with a strong corps of IM'ers. VanWinkle finished 23rd in the C Finals in the 400-LC IM with a time of 5:05.86.
"They had great races in the morning to qualify and it was a good showing for both of them," said Albiero.
Matt Maley represented the men's side for the Cardinals. He pulled off a strong performance in the 50-LC free with a 24th place. He stepped it up a notch and finished 14th in the 100-LC fly.
"We're really excited about being here and it's really great exporsure for our athletes and our program," said Albiero. "We're learning a lot by being at a meet like this and that's exciting news for us. There are more great events tomorrow and we're looking forward to it."
