LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With a mixture of new opponents and traditional regional rivals, the University of Louisville swimming and diving team has finalized the 2004-2005 schedule which was released today by head coach Arthur Albiero.
"We are looking forward to our dual meet season which features a nice combination of Big Ten and Big East opponents, as well as our traditional regional rivalries," said Albiero, who begins his second season as head coach of the aquatic Cardinals. "We have upgraded our schedule as part of the preparation for our final season in Conference USA."
The schedule features six regular season home meets, with West Virginia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Wright State and Evansville on tap for visits to U of L. The Cardinals will travel to Illinois, Eastern Illinois, Miami (Ohio), Georgia, Kentucky, and Western Kentucky among other destinations.
"This is our last season in Conference USA and we want it to contribute towards our quest to compete at the highest level in the very competitive Big East Conference," said Albiero.
In 2003-04, the Cardinals fielded a solid dual meet season and then finished strongly at the C-USA Championships where they tallied 19 school records and had three conference champions. The men saw their highest finish with a third place in the meet which the women finishing sixth. Three Cardinal divers went on to the NCAA Diving Zones.
"We are hoping that the momentum generated in the sport of swimming by the Olympics will carry over to the collegiate season," said Albiero, who coached 200-breaststroke bronze medallist Anne Poleska, during his stint at Alabama.
Albiero has 15 new faces on the team (nine men an six women.
"The program has a new look, with lots of new faces. We are young but the talent level bodes well for this year and the future," said Albiero.
