NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville men's cross country team improved to a perfect 2-for-2 on the 2004 season as freshman Wesley Korir won his second straight individual title to lead the Cardinals to the team title at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University on Saturday morning.
The Cardinals, with five runners finishing in the top 10 spots, dominated the nine-team event with 20 points while Belmont University finished a distant second with 57 points. U of L opened 2004 with a first-place team finish and an individual title for Korir at last week's Woodford Trials in Versailles, Ky.
Korir again led the way for the Cardinals this week as U of L swept the top three spots in the field of 102 runners. The Murray State transfer and native of Eldoret, Kenya, covered the 8-kilometer course with a time of 24 minutes, 50.77 seconds, while teammate Wes Seacat (So., New Albany, Ind.) was second with a time of 25:30.33 and U of L newcomer Nurani Sheikh (So., Salt Lake City, Utah) was third with a 25:32.56.
U of L junior Tim Kaiser finished fifth with a time of 25:39.47, while fellow junior Brian Hurst closed out the scoring with a time of 26:16.37 and a ninth-place finish.
"I think our program is certainly moving in the right direction," said Mann. "This was our first overnight road trip of the season and I think it was a very successful one. We're off to a good start this fall, but we've got to continue to improve and build on these first two meets."
Up next, the Cardinals will have a week off before returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Greater Louisville Classic hosted by the Greater Louisville Sports Commission at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park.
