LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated William & Mary 5-2 Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals have now won 24 consecutive matches at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center.
The Cardinals notched the doubles point to start the match as the team of Matt Mayer and Jeremy Clark, No. 27 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, defeated Steven Kane and Geoff Russell 8-5 at the top seed. Octavian Nicodim and Mark Kennedy teamed to beat Colin O'Brien 9-8 at No. 2. William & Mary's Jeff Kader and Alex Fish edged Damar Johnson and Jakob Gustafsson 9-8 at No. 3
In singles action, Mayer topped Kader 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1. Jhonny Berrido posted a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 win over Russell at No. 4. Clark defeated O'Brien 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 at the five spot. Gustafsson posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Fish at No. 6.
William & Mary's Kelleher defeated Nicodim 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and Kane topped Johnson 7-5, 7-6 at No. 3.
"This was our second four and a half hour match with this team in two weeks," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Jhonny Berrido again served as our closer as he sealed the fourth decisive point for us. He is one of the most clutch players in college tennis. Mark Kennedy and Octavian Nicodim came up big by sealing our doubles point. This is their only second match together. Matt Mayer had his best day in his four year career by defeating #35 ranked Jeff Kader and teamed with Jeremy Clark to beat the doubles team of Goeff Russell and Steven Kane."
The Cardinals (13-7) will play Western Michigan Monday, March 29 at noon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
