FORT WORTH, Texas. - -
The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated East Carolina 4-0 Saturday in the semifinals of the Conference USA Shootout hosted by TCU.
The Cardinals won the doubles point as the team of Jeremy Clark and Matt Mayer defeated Darren Mansell and Charl Meyer 8-1 at the top seed. Jakob Gustafsson and Octavian Nicodim edged East Carolina's Paulo Baumer and Nick Rose 9-8 at No. 8 to clinch the point.
In singles, Damar Johnson, No. 99 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, defeated Felipe Fonseca 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 at the three seed. Jhonny Berrido beat Mansell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 and Gustafsson picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Gerard Galindo at No. 6.
"We have a lot of respect for East Carolina," said Louisville coach Rex Ecarma. "They came in here with a 6-1 record, and arguably one of the hottest teams in the conference. Since it was our first outdoor match and on the road, we really need a team effort and got that today. We need this type of momentum going into our match against No. 6 TCU on Sunday. They have some of the top players in the country and hold a homecourt advantage, so we need to execute our game plan perfectly."
The Cardinals (6-5) will play host, sixth-ranked TCU, Sunday in the finals of the C-USA Shootout.
