Swimming and Diving Ace Out Evansville in Dual Meet

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Carrying over the momentum from their own final home meet on Friday, the Louisville Cardinals' men's and women's swimming and diving teams came out on fire Saturday to spoil the University of Evansville's home finale at Wyttenbach Pool in Carson Center. Uof L defeated the Aces 183-114 on the women's side and 172-121 on the men's side.
"I am very proud in the way we raced tonight! It was a awesome dual meet, and one our seniors will cherish as their last dual meet as a Cardinal. This was by far our best 'team' meet," said Arthur Albiero, U of L head coach. "The biggest difference today was our resolve to fight for every point, and our depth guys came through today! Since our training trip we have been talking a lot about our 'new team' for 2004. Tonight's performance left no doubt that we are indeed a brand new team. Looking at the short and medium term goals we have for the program, this win solidifies our direction for the near future."
Both the U of L men and women started the meet out strongly with wins in the 200-medley relay. Joseph Mittel, Dale Parker, Kleber Ihara and Andy Bieger just edged out Evansville A-relay team. Larissa Niehoff, Heather Meng, Stephanie Wyatt and Emily Rabe finished almost three seconds ahead of the runner-up.
For the women, Lauren Bullock won the 200- and 500-free and Meng took the 100-breast, 200-IM and 200-breast. Angie Nicolletta was another multiple race winner with firsts in the 100-fly, 200-fly and the 100-free. Rabe picked up a win in a tightly contested 50-free. In the final relay, Rabe, Wyatt, Bullock and Nicolletta picked up a first in the 200-free relay.
For the men, Matt Lees took first in the grueling 1000-free, with Jon Farnham finishing right on his heels to go 1-2 in that race. Mittel easily won the 100-back but was edged int the 200-back by Evansville's Mike Tomes. Ihara had wins in both the 100-fly, 200-fly and 200-IM. Farnham took the 100-free to help Louisville pull away. The Cardinal men sealed the win with a win in the 200-free relay when Bieger, Lees, Parker and Farnham finished two seconds ahead of U of L's B-team of Felix Spittler, Tim Thomas, James Winchester and Vinnie Souza. UE's relay team finished four seconds behind the leader.
In diving, seniors Jerilyn Drummond and Sean Wilkinson scored points, with Wilkinson sweeping both boards and Drummond taking the one-meter and finishing second in the three-meter.
"It was a new school record for Kleber Ihara in the 200-Fly. I thought Heather Meng and Dale Parker, who was coming back from illness had a great meet. Joseph Mittel had his best in-season performance ever in the 100 -back," said a pleased Albiero, who was ticking off his team's accomplishments during the meet. "Ann Isaacs had three lifetime best performances in the 1000-free, 100-back, 200-back. And it was another solid meet by Mandy Lynn, Jonathan Farnham, Rob Thompson, and Lauren Seymour.
