Men's Tennis Falls to Michigan State 4-3

EAST LANSING, Mich. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell to Michigan State 4-3 Saturday in East Lansing.
Michigan State began the match by winning the doubles point as the team of Chris Mitchell and Andrew Formanczyk defeated Louisville's Jeremy Clark and Matt Mayer 8-4 at No. 2. The Cards pulled even as Damar Johnson and Jakob Gustafsson teamed to bead Anthony Stefani and Mike Brown 8-6 at the three spot. Michigan's Eric Simonton and Cameron Marshall clinched the doubles point, edging Octavian Nicodim and Jhonny Berrido 9-8 at the top seed.
Berrido posted a 6-2, 7-6(4) win over Marshall at No. 2, Mayer defeated Mitchell 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 and Clark beat Mike Flowers 6-1, 6-3 at the six-spot as the Cards built a 3-1 lead.
Michigan State responded as defeated Johnson 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 and Joe McWilliams posted a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Gustafsson at the five-spot. Formanczyk gave the Spartans the win with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 decision against Nicodim.
"We had several opportunities to put this match away, but didn't show proper amount of poise," said Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma. " "We turned a victory into a defeat because we didn't have enough poise at the end of the match."
U of L (3-3) will travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to play Middle Tennessee State on Feb. 7 at 1 p.m.
