
Women's Basketball Falls 72-58 at Marquette

Milwaukee, Wis. - Marquette used a 13-0 run to close out the first half to defeat Louisville 72-58 Sunday afternoon in Al McGuire Center. Freshman Katie Olson led the Cardinals with 15 points and Sara Nord added 13 for the Cardinals. Katie O'Grady led the Golden Eagles with 15 points.
The Cardinals started the second half with a 9-2 run but then freshman Jazz Covington was called for two quick fouls and had to sit with 17:28 remaining in the half. The Cardinals cut it to five with the run to start the game but that was the closet they would get.
Marquette finished the game shooting 37.9 percent from the field and 50 percent from the three-point line. Louisville shot 43.6 percent from the field and just 15.3 percent from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles outrebounded the Cardinals 45-28.
Louisville fell behind 8-2 to start the first half then the Cards made a run capped by Covington's back-to-back baskets to take an 11-10 lead. The Cardinals held the lead until the 3:58 mark of the half when Marquette's Crystal Weaver scored a layup to put the Golden Eagles up 24-23. Nina Simotes nailed a jumper on the next possession to give the Cards back the lead. Then Marquette went on a 13-0 run in the final 3:20 of the game to go up 36-24 at the half.
The Cards shot 39.3 percent for the half while the Golden Eagles shot 41.4 percent. The Golden Eagles outrebounded the Cardinals 23-12 in the half.
Louisville will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 16 as they host Saint Louis in Freedom Hall at 7:00 p.m.
