MILWAUKEE (April 18) - The top seed in the Conference USA Tournament, Tulane (18-5), beat fourth-seeded Louisville (19-7), 4-0, this afternoon to advance to the Championship match.
"We were winning the last three slots but the doubles point we lost was crucial," said U of L coach Rex Ecarma. "It saddens us not to be in the finals but we have to focus on the third match with South Florida because the will have repercussions for the NCAA selections."
The Green Wave swept the doubles point with an 8-4 Michael Kogan/Victor Romero win over Cody Conley/Jakib Gustafsson in the no. 1 spot. The no. 2 match clinched the doubles point for Tulane when the duo of Goran Vasiljevic and Dmitriy Koch defeated Matt Mayer/Harry Walsh, 8-5.
The Green Wave easily took the match in singles play. Kogan was first to claim a win in singles play when he took the no. 1 match, 6-1, 6-2 over Conley.
"Kogan is the Dwyane Wade of tennis," said Ecarma.
Jorge Lievano beat Jhonny Berrido, 6-2, 6-1 in the no. 5 singles match.
Romero was the next Tulane player to win his match when he beat Paulo Carvalho, 6-3, 6-2, in the no. 2 singles match.
The Green Wave will face TCU in the championship match at noon tomorrow at Helfaer. Louisville will play South Florida in the third place match at 9 a.m. at Helfaer.
