Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team ended a seven game losing steak with a 86-59 win over Saint Louis in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament. Lori Nero led all scorers with 20 points. Sara Nord and Angel Bradley scored 17 points and Carol Brown added 11 points.
"I am proud of my 11 kids," said interim head coach Steve Huber. "When they came out tonight I asked them to believe in themselves because for some reason we lost because of what these 11 kids have been through."
"We came out tonight and fought like a family and all 11 made contributions."
Nero got the Cardinals off to a hot start scoring nine straight points. After the score was tied at 4-4 the Cards held Saint Louis scoreless for an eight minutes and used a 19-3 run to go up 10-21.
Louisville shot 42.4 percent in the first half and held Saint Louis to 35 percent and just 25 percent from behind the arc. Louisville led 41-23 at the break.
The Cardinals started the second half with a 6-0 run with Nero score the first four points. Louisville continued to build on their lead and held their biggest lead at 69-37 off a Nero three point play with 8:06 remaining.
Louisville shot 55.6 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting 48.3 percent. The Cardinal defense held Saint Louis to 38.5 percent shooting and 23.5 percent from behind the arc. Louisville outrebounded the Billikens 44-30 and forced them into 20 turnovers.
Louisville will play DePaul tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in the second round.
