LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team shut out Saint Louis 7-0 to record its fourth win in five matches Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 12-4 on the season.
Louisville won the doubles point to start the match as the team of Cody Conley and Jakob Gustafsson defeated Ikaika Jobe and Taylor Curran at the top seed. In No. 2 doubles action, Harry Walsh and Matt Mayer teamed up to edge Lance Vodicka and Tom de Larzac 8-6, while Octavian Nicodim and Sebastian Aspillaga beat Thomas Kwong and Michael Hoosien at No. 3.
In singles action, Conley defeated Jobe 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 to lead the Cards' sweep. Paula Carvalho and Vodicka battled to three sets before Carvalho took the match 6-3, 6-7, 7-6. Nicodim, Mayer, Jhonny Berrido and Walsh all won in straight sets for the Cards.
"Saint Louis played last year's Conference USA Champion South Florida close, so we knew we were in for a dog fight," said U of L coach Rex Ecarma. "My players responded to the challenge and shut them out for our ninth shutout and 12th win. The depth of our team is really showing and I am proud of them. Once this group smells blood, they are like piranhas which will produce shutouts."
