Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team held the Reebok Lady Stars to just one basket in the final 12 minutes for a 78-53 win Tuesday evening in Cardinal Arena. Freshman Katie Olson led the Cardinals with 19 points. Jazz Covington, Angel Bradley and Sara Nord all had double-double performances. Covington had 17 points and 11 rebounds, Bradley had 10 points and 11 rebounds and Nord finished with 13 points and 12 assists.
"We weren't real happy with our defensive effort in the first half and we didn't shot the ball very well," said head coach Tom Collen. "I thought in the second half our intensity was better which led to a better job rebounding the basketball.
"I am proud of the way we didn't lose confidence in our ability to step up and take shots. This team is going to need to score in order to win because we still have a ways to go defensively."
The Lady Stars led by as many as eight points in the first half. The Cards made an 8-0 run in the final 1:28 with Nord drilling a half court shot at the buzzer to knot the score at 33. The Cards shot just 38.2 percent from the field and just 17.6 percent from behind the arc in the first half.
The Lady Stars led early in the second half until the 13 minute mark when an Olson jumper tied the score at 46. Freshman Nee Nee Parham nailed a three-pointer to give the Cards their first lead of the half. Bradley sparked a 27-1 run in the final 12 minutes of play to put the Lady Stars away.
The Cardinals shot 47.5 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc in the second half to finish the game shooting 43.2 percent. The Lady Stars outrebounded the Cards 48-47.
The Cards will tip off the regular season on Friday, Nov. 21 against Xavier at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Arena.
