The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to East Carolina in a "telephone meet". Due to scheduling difficulties, U of L swam in Crawford and ECU swam in Greenville and the race results were faxed to each other.

The U of L men fell 178-115 with the women being downed 174-83. The Cardinals swam Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Sunday afternoon and drove home, arriving in Louisville at 1:30 a.m. The team practiced in the morning, had a full warmup and had today's meet at 1 p.m.

"We voted after Sunday's meet with Virginia Tech and decided our effort level was a six. We made a commitment to put forth a effort level of ten today against East Carolina and I think we were a very strong nine," said Arthur Albiero, first year head swim coach.

Diver Sean Wilkinson swept his events with firsts on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Jerilyn Drummond took first in the 3-meter board but was edged by Lucy Hicks in the 1-meter. Matt Lees won the 100-fly and Emily Rabe had a strong performance in the 50-free and had a lifetime best in her leg of the free relay.

"We had to generate the enthusiasm and the competitive spirit from within today and it was a great learning experience," said Albiero.

Lauren Bullock won the 1000-free and Heather Meng took the 200 Breast. Freshman Mandy Lynn took second in the 200-breast event.

"We had several great performances today, including Emily's (Rabe)lifetime best," said Albiero.
