LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Men's Tennis Blanks Southern Illinois

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team notched its second shutout of the day by defeating Southern Illinois 7-0 in a late match Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards improve to 5-0 on the season.

The Cardinals took the doubles point to start the match as the 22nd ranked tandem of Cody Conley and Octavian Nicodim defeated Alon Savidor and Julian Angel Botero 8-5 at the top seed. Matt Mayer and Jakob Gustafsson teamed to Southern Illinois' Peter Bong and Gian Carlo Remigio 8-2 at No. 2; while Jake Kirts and Sebastian Aspillaga shut out Lukasz Soswa and Bojan Ilievski 8-0 at the three-seed.

Louisville swept the singles in straight sets. At the top seed, U of L's Carvahlo, No. 111 in the ITA singles rankings defeated Savidor 6-2, 6-3 at the top seed. Conley beat Bong 6-1, 7-6 at No. 2. Nicodim defeated Soswa 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. Mayer posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Botero at the four-spot. Berrido beat Ilievski 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 and Kirts defeated Remigio 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.

"Our team is really building a lot of momentum for the rest of the season," said Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma. "We finished the month of January undefeated and hopefully that will help us through a brutally tough February. Most of our players are undefeated, so their confidence level is sky-high."

U of L (5-0) will travel to Bloomington, Ind., to take on the No. 45 Indiana Hoosiers on Friday, Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
