WEST LAFEYETTE, Ind. - Junior Emily Daunhauer led the University of Louisville women's cross country team with a 20th-place finish at the Great American Legends meet Saturday morning at Purdue University.
Not only did the 109 runners from 11 teams have to battle the high heat, but they also ran a 6000-meter course rather than the traditional women's distance of 5000 meters. The NCAA distance is 6000 meters.
Daunhauer finished in 24:08 to lead the Cardinals for the second consecutive week. The Louisville native led U of L last week with a 13th-place finish in the season-opening meet at Indiana.
Sophomore Heather Griffith placed 32nd with a time of 24:53, followed by junior Laine Hamman (52nd) and sophomore Corryn McCrae (53rd).
Marquette swept the top three spots in the 109-person race, with Jessie Swan and Susan Barth both finishing the race in 22:03.
The Legends race honors Bob Schul, 1964 Olympic gold medalist in the 5,000m. Schul now coaches men's and women's cross country at Wright State.
The Cardinals travel to Nashville Sept. 21 to compete in the Commodore Classic.
