Milwaukee, Wis. - Louisville defeated Marquette 72-58 at U. S. Cellular Arena Sunday afternoon to claim their first conference road win of the season. Sophomore point guard Sara Nord led the Cardinals with 20 points and LaKisha Hoffman finished the game with 19 points. Sophomore Katie Schwerman led Marquette with 13 points.
"It was nice to get the gorilla off our back," said head coach Martin Clapp. "I told the team before the game that we were peaking at the right time. I think that we are moving in a different direction than last season.
"Kisha Hoffman had her third double-double of the season. In order to win big games we need a presence in the post and that is what she has given us. Marju and Sara are also playing well right now and have gotten their confidence back."
Marquette cut the Louisville lead to 44-40 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Then the Cardinals responded with a 11-0 run sparked by Marju Sober and Sabrina Minter to push the score to 51-40 with nine minutes remaining.
The Lady Eagles' guard Kristi Johnson hit a three-pointer at the six minute mark to cut the lead to 49-56 but Nord answered with a trey of her own. Nord hit another three-pointer with just over three minutes remaining to put the Lady Eagles away.
Hoffman scored 17 of her 19 points in the first half. Nord started the first half, scoring Louisville's first five points and finished the half with 10. Hoffman scored 11 consecutive points to end the half, putting the Cards up 38-25 at the half.
Louisville shot 41.7 percent from the field in the first half and held Marquette to 29.2 percent shooting. The Cardinals also outrebounded the Lady Eagles 21-15 in the first half.
The Cardinals will finish out the regular season on the road against Cincinnati on Sunday Feb. 24 at 2:00 p.m.
