BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Seimone Augustus scored 16 points, and second-ranked Louisiana State used a 21-2 first-half run to pull away from Louisville for a 65-46 victory Thursday night in the championship game of the womenscollegehoops.com Classic.
LSU (8-0) continued its best start since winning the first 14 games of the 1996-97 season. The Lady Tigers also improved to 14-0 in regular-season tournament games at home.
Lori Nero led Louisville (3-4) with 15 points, and Sarah Nord added 14.
LSU extended its 18-point halftime lead to 41-19 on layups by Augustus and DeTrina White early in the second half. But the Cardinals responded with a 10-0 run over the next 2:27.
Nord highlighted the run with a pair 3-point baskets to pull Louisville to 41-29 with 16:04 remaining.
Louisville's only lead came at 7-6 on Nord's 3-pointer 3:39 in, marking the first time LSU has trailed at home this season.
The Lady Tigers went back in front to stay on a 7-foot jumper by Aiysha Smith, and layups by White and Doneeka Hodges in a span of 11 seconds put LSU in front 12-7. Nero hit a jumper over Smith to pull Louisville within three points, but LSU scored the next 15 in just under 6 minutes.
Nord ended the Louisville drought with another 3-pointer, but the Cardinals got no closer than 15 the rest of the first half.
A short jumper by Augustus gave the Lady Tigers their largest lead at 35-15, and LSU was in front 37-19 at the break. Augustus, the 2002 national High School Player of the Year, was selected as the tournament's MVP.
