EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Despite battling cooler temperatures and a steady rain, the University of Louisville women's cross country team placed five runners in the top 10 to win the Evansville Invitational Saturday in Evansville, Ind.
Louisville finished with 33 points to win the three-team event. Southern Illinois and Evansville each finished with 47 points, but Evansville was awarded second place due to the "sixth-place" tiebreaker.
Junior Emily Daunhauer led the Cardinals with a fourth-place finish with a time of 18:19.14. Sophomore Corryn McCrae (18:27.65) and freshman Emily Leeper (18:37.98) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
Freshman Crystal Duffala came in eighth and junior Beth Wendt was 10th to round out the Cards' top 10 finishers.
Also turning in strong performances were junior Laine Hamman (11th), freshman Ashley Ruberg (17th) and senior Carrie Besser (23rd).
All eight U of L runners recorded personal-best 5000-meter cross country times on the day. For the Cardinals, it was their first team win of the season.
Southern Illinois' Katie Meehan set a course record with a time of 17:55.62 to win the event.
The Cardinals return to action November 2 when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., for the Conference USA Championships.
