
Cards Get Past UAB for Eighth Straight Win

Louisville, Ky. - University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated the Lady Blazers of UAB 72-63 today at the Kentucky International Convention Center. The Cardinals improved to 15-7 overall and 10-1 in Conference USA, extending their home win record to 11-0.
Marju Sober set the pace hitting a jumper scoring the first two points of the game. The junior guard continued by hitting 7 of 9 three-point attempts for 21 of her 27 points. Freshman point guard Sara Nord, who was averaging 7.5 assists coming into today's game, produced six of her eight assists in the first half.
Louisville began the game with an 8-2 run but the Lady Blazers scored seven straight to lead by one. After two lead changes, Louisville pushed ahead as the first half ended with a score of 32-23. The Cardinals opened the second half with a 10-0 run, extending their lead to 42-26 in the first three minutes. Led by Jackson and Thomas, the Lady Blazers pulled within five points with 7:27 remaining. The Cards led once more with two penetrating drives by Nord and a three pointer by Sober. UAB attempted another comeback late in the game but Kara Kessans clenched it for Louisville, with six free throws with less than two minutes in the game.
Louisville shot only 38.7 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from the three in the first half. The Cards scored 40 points in the second half, shooting 54.2 percent from the field and 71.4 from behind the line. For the game, Louisville shot 45.5 percent while they held UAB to only 32.3 percent from the field. Deanna Jackson of UAB ended the game with a double-double, scoring 20 of her 28 points in the second half and pulled down 15 rebounds.
Louisville will host Marquette in a double-header with the men on Thursday, Feb. 8 at Freedom Hall at 6:15 p.m. The men will play directly following the women at 9:00 p.m.
