Senior Oliver Cantrell's win at No. 6 singles clinched Louisville's 4-3 win over the Hokies.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team edged Virginia Tech 4-3 Sunday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech Campus. The hard-fought match took over five hours to complete and was not decided until the final match.

The Hokies, captured the doubles points by winning a tie-breaker in the deciding match. Tech won the No. 3 doubles match as Jay Bruner and Michael Kurz defeated Oliver Cantrell and Jake Kirts 9-7 and clinched the point as Davor Dupljak and Francis Huot won a 9-8 (8) decision over Joachim Lien and Paulo Carvalho at the top seed. Louisville's only doubles win was at No. 2 as Conley and McCombe defeated Tech's Andreas Laulund and Andrew Vu 8-4.

The Cardinals picked up singles wins at No. 1 where Tvrtko Kujundzic defeated Dupljak 6-3, 6-3, Carvalho won a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Kurz at No. 3, Conley defeated Bruner 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(2) at the five seed and Cantrell clinched the match with his 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win over Gerard Baynham at No. 6.

"We will remember this match at Virginia Tech for a long time," said Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma. "We had to face almost every kind of adversity a team can face - a hostile crowd, physical fatigue, muscles cramps, and we came out with a win. Every time we have to face a tough situation, we will look back on this experience and draw from it. Oliver Cantrell came up big for us. He played a marathon match, fought through leg cramps and found a way to win."

Louisville will play host to Bowling Green and Toledo on Saturday March 3 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Match times are at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
