Men's Tennis Opens Fall Season at Ball State Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Matt Mayer won the Singles "C" division, and sophomore Cody Conley advanced to the finals of the "B" division as the University of Louisville men's tennis team opened up the fall season at the Ball State Invitational.
In his collegiate debut, Mayer collected straight set wins over Justin Kates of Western Michigan, Joe Gabey of Ball State, before battling Kirk Schuler of Drake 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3 to gain a berth in the finals, where he defeated Branton Blankenbaker of Eastern Illinois 6-3, 6-2 to claim the "C" singles division championship.
Conley defeated Butler's Jimmy Borendame, Ball State's Kevin Burnett, Aaron Endress-Fox of Drakeand teammate Ciaran Foley before falling to Kentucky's Justin Kinney 2-6, 6-7 in the finals of the "B" singles division.
Sophomore Paulo Carvalho won the consolation bracket of the singles "A" division after losing to Kentucky's Reven Stephens in the main draw. Carvalho went on to beat Lukasz Pluta of Eastern Illinois, Stephen Killian of Drake and Robert Shamelikian of Wisconsin-Green Bay to reach the finals, where he defeated Illinois State's Jason Smit 6-2, 6-2.
U of L will travel to Urbana, Ill. to compete in the Illinois Invitational Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
