Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season With Pair Of Shutouts

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the spring season with wins over Wright State and Toledo on Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
In the match against Wright State, Louisville took the doubles point as freshmen Cody Conley and Paulo Carvalho defeated Chad Derry and Joey Turner 8-4 at the No. 1 spot, sophomores Alex Sivertsen and Brent McCombe defeated Warren Gavin and Mike Brush 8-3 at the No. 2 seed, and senior Scott Schutzman and freshman Ciaran Foley won over Wright State's Chad Camper and Frederico Mas 8-2 at No. 3.
Louisville continued to shut out Wright State as Tvrtko Kujundzic, Joachim Lien, Sivertsen, Carvalho, McCombe and Marek Blaskovic each took their matches in straight sets.
In the match against Toledo, the Cardinals again opened by taking the doubles point as Carvalho and Conley defeated Josh Weinstein and Carlos Lomena 8-5 at the top seed. At No. 2, Kujundzic and Lien defeated Hector Arroyo and Jorge Morales 8-4, while McCombe and Hizan combined to beat Anthony Lipp and Dipesh Rao 8-3 at the No. 3 spot.
In No. 1 singles action, Louisville's Kujundzic defeated Morales, ranked fifth in the Midwest Region according to Intercollegiate Tennis Rankings, in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Lien, Carvalho, Conley and Hizan each won in straight sets at Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6, respectively, while Louisville's Sivertsen outlasted Rao in a nearly three hour battle at the No. 3 spot that ended with a 7-6(6), 3-6, 7-6(8).
"This doubleheader victory shows that this team is fit and our roster is deep," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Everyone played and they all won their matches. You can't start a season any better than winning every match on every court."
Louisville will play host to perennial tennis powers Minnesota, Kansas and Middle Tennessee Jan. 29-30 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
