LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In their first dual meet since before the holidays, the University of Louisville men's and women's swim teams were swept by Toledo yesterday at Crawford Pool.
"This was a very close meet, however, we wouldn't have been able to challenge them so closely if we hadn't had such a strong training session in Florida over the break," said Rick Hill, U of L head coach. "They have a lot of swimmers with international experience."
The men lost 129-106 with the meet coming down to the final relay race. The Cardinals were without top diver Tom Manchack and two of their top distance men, yet still almost pulled an upset of the favored Toledo squad. The men opened the meet in the 400 Medley Relay with Joseph Mittel, Doug Kleman, Nils Lofgren and Christos Koutsouridis combining for the win. Mittel also won the 200-back with Lofgren winning the 200-fly. Lucius had a pair of firsts with wins in the 50-free and the 100-free and Matt Bentley won in the 200-free with seconds in the 100-free and the 400-Free Relay.
Although the women won the 400-Medley Relay and swept the top three places in diving, U of L fell 141-101. Diver Tara Tokarczyk scored 261.53, 30 points more than the second place finisher, teammate Whitney Pegler. Brooke Morgan and Ronna Tackett were the only other firsts in the meet, winning the 200 fly and the 200 breast respectively.
The Cardinals return to action next weekend when they travel to Evansville on Jan. 22.
