Swim Teams Finish Second At Southern States

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The University of Louisville won 10 races and finished second in 10 others at the Southern States as both the men's and women's team placed second.
The Davidson women's team (756.50) earned its fourth-straight Southern States title behind the stand-out effort of Female-Swimmer-of-the-Meet, Mary Shell Brosche. Brosche took first, and set meet records, in the 200 IM (2:06.74) and the 400 IM (4:27.38) and won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.94.
Western Illinois' (693.50) men won their second-straight title behind the effort of male Swimmer-of-the-Meet Greg Gargas. Gargas took first, and set a meet record, in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:31.36. He also won the 1650-yard freestyle.
Davidson's Rich DeSelm earned Coach-of-the-Year for the women and Western Illinois' Jerry Champer won the men's top award. Louisville's Woody Franklin won the diving Coach-of-the-Year. DeSelm has won the women's award for the third straight year and a total of four times.
Davidson landed five females on the All-Southern States Team and the men posted four. The University of Louisville had four on both the men's and women's team. Western Illinois and the University of Tampa were each represented by four members on the men's team.
