Norbert Elbert played four years of football at UofL, lettering in 1939 and 1940 as a sophomore and junior. He broke his knuckle in the preseason workouts before his senior season and was sidelined the better part of the year. Elbert didn’t play football in high school but coach Lawrence Apitz spotted him playing touch football in a physical education class and invited him to come out for the freshman squad. He played defense and fullback on the football team and scored the winning touchdown in Louisville’s 13-7 win over Evansville in 1940. Elbert began working at UofL in 1945 and held a number of positions which included vice president for financial affairs and vice president for administration. He served on a number of committees at UofL including those for athletics.
