A four-year second baseman for the Cardinals (1977-80), Kevin Malone (1977-80) made baseball his career. The speedy second baseman was a member of the 1980 squad that posted a school-best 38 wins, hitting .266 with 20 doubles for his career. He still ranks first in career walks, No. 6 in stolen bases (30) and ninth in runs (151). Following his career with the Cardinals, he played in the Cleveland Indians minor leagues and also played professional softball with the Kentucky Bourbons.
After a brief coaching stint at Tennessee Temple in Chattanooga, he served as a scout and minor league coach for the California Angels and Montreal Expos. He moved to the Minnesota Twins, where he was the East Coach Scouting Supervisor and had the special assignment of scouting the Braves for the 1991 World Series. Malone returned to the Expos in 1992 as Scouting Director where he supervised all scouting, drafting and signing of amateur players. He was promoted to General Manager of the Expos in 1994, where he was honored as the 1995 Best General Manager in Major League Baseball by USA Today’s Baseball Weekly. He followed that position as the assistant general manager of the Baltimore Orioles before being named General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
