Until the explosive passing attack of UofL Coach Howard Schnellenberger was instituted at UofL, John Madeya owned nearly every Cardinal passing record. In his three-year career at UofL (1970-72), he completed 364 of 746 passes for 4,504 yards and 34 touchdowns, all still among the all-time top five for the Cardinals. He led UofL to the 1970 Missouri Valley Conference championship and the Pasadena Bowl.

Following his senior season, Madeya played in the North-South All-Star Bowl and the All-America Bowl. He played two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons following his collegiate career.
