George Hauptfuhrer (1944-46)

As a member of Coach Bernard “Peck” Hickman’s first team, George Hauptfuhrer led the Cardinals to a 16-3 record and the KIAC Championship in 1944-45 as UofL’s top scorer (16.2 points per game). He co-captained UofL’s 22-6 squad in 1945-46, again leading the Cards in scoring (13.2 ppg). He declined an opportunity to play in the NBA after being selected in the first round by the Boston Celtics, instead attending law school at Pennsylvania where he graduated cum laude and made the Law Review. An associate with the firm of Dechert Price and Rhoads, he was made a partner in 1959 and was Chairman and CEO in 1985 until his retirement in 1991.
