Derek Smith distinguished himself as an outstanding forward on UofL’s basketball teams from 1978-82. He helped the Cardinals to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 1980 NCAA Championship and another Final Four appearance in 1982. The 1981 Metro Conference Player of the Year, Smith is fourth on the UofL all-time scoring list (1,826 points) and second in career field goal percentage (57.7 percent).

Smith played nine seasons in the NBA for five different teams including the Golden State Warriors (1982-83), San Diego Clippers (’83-84), Sacramento Kings (’86-88), Philadelphia 76ers (’88-90) and Boston Celtics (’90-91).
