He set a school record in a four-mile race with a time of 19:38 in 1968. He earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors in 1966, 1967 and 1969 with top 15 finishes in the MVC Cross Country Championships. Ullrich ran the mile, half-mile and mile relay events in track for the Cardinals, scoring in every meet. He teamed with Mike Norris, Steve Dapont and Rich Hofaker to set a school record in the mile relay. Another Ullrich first-place finish was his Lewis S. Strength Scholarship Award as the Valedictorian of Speed Scientific School.

After earning two masters of engineering degrees at UofL, he became a research/teaching fellow at the University of Illinois, where he earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering in 1975. He returned to the University of Louisville where he was first an assistant professor, associate professor and ultimately a professor of civil engineering. A five-time individual medalist in the National Masters Cross Country Championship, Ullrich is a two-time nominee for the Gil Clark Award for exceptional service to running sports in Louisville.
