Bob Bender played both defensive end and offensive tackle for the Cardinal football team. He earned a starting role midway through his freshman season in the defensive line. In the offensive line, Bender was a key factor in the protection of the legendary Johnny Unitas, U of L’s quarterback from 1951-54. Bender was also a catcher on the Cardinals’ 1952 baseball team.
Bender served on the U of L Board of Overseers from 1977-79 and on the Athletic Advisory Commission in the early 80’s. He is the vice chairman of the Kentucky Chapter of the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame. Bender is the founder and former CEO of Airguard Industries, Inc.
