Three Cardinals Earn ACC Softball Honors

The University of Louisville's Megan Hensley and Sidney Melton were selected to the All-ACC Softball first team while Maddy Newman was named to the All-Freshmen Team as announced by the conference office Tuesday. The all-ACC teams were decided in a vote by the league coaches and were based on performance in conference play.

This marks the second league honor for Hensley, who was named to the all-ACC second team in 2016. The junior pitcher/designated player from Ashland, Ky., led the Cardinals in ACC play with a .406 batting average, six home runs, eight doubles, 28 runs and 26 RBIs. In the circle, she posted an 8-3 record and one save against conference opponents with two shutouts and 54 strikeouts in 84.1 innings.

On May 1, Hensley was named ACC Pitcher of the Week and swept the USA Softball and National Fastpitch Coaches Association and espnW National Player of the Week Awards.

Melton (Columbus, Ohio) makes her first appearance on the all-ACC squad. After incurring season-ending injury last season, the redshirt junior produced impressive results with a .388 batting average which included two home runs. She led the Cardinals with 19 runs, a .474 on-base percentage and was 9-for-9 in stolen bases against ACC opponents. Melton was named to the 2016 ACC All-Tournament team.

Newman, a freshman from Osceola, Ind., had an impressive rookie season, finishing third on the team with a .316 batting average. The second baseman/outfielder tallied two doubles, one triple and three stolen bases in conference play.

Louisville (32-19, 10-12 ACC) earned the No. 8 seed in the ACC Championship and will open the tournament against No. 9 Syracuse Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Georgia Tech's Shirley Mewborn Field.
