LOUISVILLE, Ky. – E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park will once again be the center of the cross country world this weekend as it hosts the 2017 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18. The event will begin with the women's 6K race at 10:45 a.m., followed by the men's race at 11:45 a.m. Live coverage of the race will be available with a subscription to FloTrack, with results available on NCAA.com.
This weekend's field consists of 31 qualifying teams, comprised of 18 automatic qualifiers and 13 at-large selections. In addition to the teams, 38 runners qualified individually for the event. This is the third time that Sawyer Park has hosted the championship meet, following previous events in 2012 and 2015.
Louisville sophomore Dorcas Wasike earned one of those individual berths with an All-Region time of 20:22.3 at the Southeast Regional. Wasike is the third Cardinal women's runner to qualify individually for the event. With a top-40 finish on Saturday, she will earn the first All-American honor for a women's runner in program history.
The NCAAs will be her fourth run at Sawyer Park, where she has improved her personal-best time in each outing. In her last home run, she finished second at the ACC Championships with a personal-best time of 19:54.1. As for her teammates, the Louisville women's squad narrowly missed out on a second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship, finishing fifth in the regional.
In the overall field, defending men's national champion Northern Arizona is favored to repeat, holding the top ranking throughout the season. The Lumberjacks will be challenged by second-ranked BYU and Syracuse, who took the ACC title on the course in October. In the women's race, defending champion Oregon will contend for another title, but top-ranked Colorado and New Mexico will provide tough competition.
