The Louisville track and field team ended day one of the ACC Championships with an ACC Champion and an ACC runner-up. Five Cardinals finished the day earning All-ACC honors, while one school record was broken.
"The performances by Ernest Kibet and Caitlin Gilmore were the highlights of a strong first day at the ACC Championships," said head coach Dale Cowper.
Kibet became the first ACC Champion for the Cardinals with a win in the 10,000m. Kibet ran the race for the first time this season winning the event with a time of 29:40.19.
"Ernest claimed our first individual ACC title after being very patient with the game plan Coach Walker has put together for him this spring," explained Cowper. "This was his first 10K of the year and it's a race he will remember for a long time."
Also in the 10,000m Japhet Kipkoech finished 12th with a season best time of 30:54.53. Senior Megan Klein finished 10th on the women's side with a personal best time of 35:44.58 while Leah Kiyohara finished 20th with a time of 39:29.33.
Gilmore shined on the first day with a career best throw of 58.00m (190-3). She finished second, earning first team All-ACC honors.
"Caitlin was a walk-on quarter miler that showed up at tryouts four years ago as a freshman," said Cowper. "At the end of the tryout we told her there was good news and bad news. The bad news was that she wouldn't make our team in our sprints area but the good news was there was a position for her as a hammer thrower. She has stuck with it for four years and today she earned first team All-ACC honors as the ACC runner-up."
Also in the women's hammer throw, Dolly Nyemah earned second team All-ACC honors with a sixth place finish. Nyemah threw a personal best of 56.75m (186-2). Rachel Serafin finished eighth with a throw of 55.11m (180-9).
