Men's Tennis Edges North Carolina State 4-3
March 13, 2015 | Men's Tennis
University of Louisville senior Chris Simich defeated North Carolina State's Nick Horton 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to lift the University of Louisville men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over the Wolfpack in an ACC matchup Friday evening.
"There were a lot of heroes tonight," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "NC State is one of the toughest places in the ACC to play. Sebastian (Stiefelmeyer) and Albert (Wagner) came back from a 1-4 deficit to win. Albert made some huge pays and Van and Chris sealed the doubles point. Sebastian played well to defeat one of the best players in the ACC and Lippens gave us another super important third point. Then Simich down 2-3 played so gutsy and clinched the match. The 2009 team had a similar experience in the exact place and went from ranked #48 to 14. This looks like a good sign."
The Cardinals (14-3, 2-1) used wins at Nos. 2 and 3 to take the first point of the match. The duo of Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Albert Wagner gave Louisville an early advantage with an 8-6 win over Beck Bone and Austin Powell. The Wolfpack (10-6, 0-3 ACC) quickly answered at No. 1 where Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster, No. 17 in the ITA doubles rankings, defeated Jeffrey Brown and Alex Gornet 8-4. Van Damrongsri and Chris Simich sealed the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Horton and Simon Norenius at the three-spot.
In singles action, Mudge evened the score by beating Wagner 6-2, 6-2 at the two-spot. Stiefelmeyer, the nation's top-ranked player put the Cards back on top with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 72 Austin Powell at the No. 1 seed. The Wolfpack responded on court four where Beck Bond beat Gornet 6-3, 6-2 to tie the match at 2-2. Louisville regained the lead behind Michael Lippens' 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Simon Norenius at No. 3. NC State answered once again when Ian Dempster topped Luis Elizondo 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6. The match came down to court five where Simich outlasted Horton 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to clinch the win.
Louisville (14-3, 2-1) will face No. 19 Wake Forest Sunday at 12 p.m.
